Vlad has been living in Japan for twelve years and teaching at OYIS for five. Apart from being the IBDP CAS coordinator, he also holds the esteemable positions of Service Learning Coordinator and MYP/DP music teacher.

Launch: The IBDP CAS Program

We are pleased to announce that the OYIS IBDP CAS Program has officially launched! This is another milestone for our Diploma Program as we start our journey as a three-program IB school.

CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is one of the three elements of the IBDP Program Core along with TOK and EE. Through CAS students are required to take part in a wide range of artistic, sporting, physical, and service-learning experiences that enrich their school life and help them make connections with the academic curriculum and the community. The aims of CAS are to challenge students to explore opportunities for self-determination, collaboration, accomplishment, and enjoyment.

CAS consists of three strands:

  • Creativity – where students extend and explore their ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance. Through creativity, students undertake experiences and projects such as:
    acting or supporting a drama performance
    participating or supporting a dance or music performance
    creating an artwork or a website
  • Activity – where students do physical exertion which contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Through activity, students undertake projects and experiences such as:
    playing on a team
    completing a training program undertaking an adventure sport or journey
  • Service – a collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need. Through Service students undertake projects and activities such as:
    • raising funds for an orphanage
    • helping at an animal shelter
    • volunteering at a retirement home or youth centre
    • helping in school (e.g., student council)
    • speaking out about an injustice
    • finding out about the water quality

Through undertaking their CAS experiences and projects students are required to meet the following seven Learning Outcomes:

Learning Outcomes for CAS

In order to successfully execute their ideas students use the IPARD, a 5-stage scaffolding framework that allows them to systematically and gradually plan and carry out their experiences.

CAS Cycle
As shown in the above diagram the 5 stages of IPARD are:
  • Investigation
  • Preparation
  • Action
  • Reflection
  • Demonstration

The CAS Program starts at the beginning of Year 11 and it lasts for 18 months. During this time students are expected to continuously be involved in CAS experiences and projects. Upon completion of their CAS program students will have a better understanding of:
  • identifying goals
  • developing strategies
  • determining actions for personal goals
  • exploring new possibilities
  • embracing new challenges and adapting to new roles
  • understand they are members of local and global communities with responsibilities towards each other and the environment

We are excited to officially launch the CAS program and we look forward to seeing our students further develop and grow through it.

WASC Praises Osaka School

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) recently completed an evaluation of Osaka YMCA International School (OYIS). It found that measures were in place to support inclusive education and ensure that each child meets his or her potential. OYIS has been praised for being ‘caring’ and committed to achieving high standards.

OYIS is an IB continuum school, which means it offers an IB curriculum throughout the whole school, from the Primary Years Programme (PYP) through to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the IB Diploma in Grades 11 and 12.nWASC recognised that growth in PYP was above average while the MYP Maths’ scores were particularly impressive.

Despite the challenges all schools have faced during the pandemic, WASC found that the school had been seen as being ‘caring’ and ‘flexible’ during these times.

OYIS, which has campuses in Nakatsu and Tosabori, aims to be inclusive and support each child’s needs. WASC also recognized this, saying it was a significant area of growth. With the school’s first-ever IB Diploma students preparing to graduate this year, WASC felt the college guidance program was developing well.

PYP Principal Dwayne Primeau said: “We work very hard to ensure that we build a school culture that is inclusive, caring and welcoming. The school has expanded rapidly over the past few years due to the support of the Osaka YMCA, Osaka city, our amazing staff, students and parents. It is reassuring to hear that WASC feels we are continuing to move in the right direction to provide a truly international education to our students.”

MYP/DP Principal Mark Beales added: “It was pleasing to hear that WASC recognized the significant amount of work teachers have put in over the past few years. As well as meeting the challenges of covid, the school has expanded to include the MYP and IB Diploma. We are delighted that WASC praised our caring and empathetic approach to helping students; we will continue to promote these qualities.”
