Osaka YMCA
International School

Our Campuses

OYIS has more than 300 students across our two campuses. Both campuses are centered in the heart of Osaka with easy access to public transportation.
  • We are the only fully-accredited international school within the city of Osaka
  • All classrooms use modern IT devices including smart boards, Apple TVs, and projectors, as well as laptop carts at the Nakatsu Campus
  • We are the only international school within the city of Osaka to be an IB continuum school, offering PYP, MYP and the IB Diploma
  • Students experience small learning communities and a family atmosphere at each of our campuses

Nakatsu Campus

Our students from ages 3-14 spend some or all of their time at our original home in Nakatsu, just northwest of Osaka’s largest transportation hub, Umeda. Repurposed from a traditional Japanese elementary school, the Nakatsu Campus is now the thriving heart of OYIS.

Facilities include:

  • Comfortable classrooms for every grade
  • A stand-alone Early Childhood Center
  • Specialist areas for Science, Music, Art and Drama
  • A large outdoor playground space
  • Curated library
  • Gymnasium
  • 24-hour secure entry

Tosabori Campus

Organic Garden

A passion project of one of our Early Childhood educators, the organic garden has developed on the Nakatsu campus as a place for our younger students to learn about growth, life cycles, caring for living things, and getting good and dirty!

Gardening is educational and develops new skills including:

  • Responsibility– from caring for plants
  • Understanding– as they learn about cause and effect (for example, plants die without water, weeds compete with plants)
  • Self-confidence – from achieving their goals and enjoying the food they have grown
  • Love of nature – a chance to learn about the outdoor environment in a safe and pleasant place
  • Reasoning and discovery – learning about the science of plants, animals, weather, the environment, nutrition and simple construction
  • Physical activity – doing something fun and productive
  • Cooperation– including shared play activity and teamwork
  • Creativity– finding new and exciting ways to grow food
  • Nutrition – learning about where fresh food comes from.

Rooftop Pool

The Nakatsu campus swimming pool is the source of endless hours of learning and fun. When available, students swim during PE class, and compete against other schools in swimming races. In addition, swimming is an extremely important life skill. The most important reason is that swimming is the only sport which can save your child’s life.

But it is not just fun! Swimming also provides loads of health benefits which can help to keep your children healthy and happy at the same time. For example, swimming keeps your child’s heart and lungs healthy, improves strength and flexibility, increases stamina, and even improves balance and posture.
Another great thing about swimming is that children of any age or ability can take part and it is more accessible for children with additional needs than almost any other sport.

Finally, swimming provides challenges and rewards accomplishments, which helps children to become self-confident and believe in their abilities.

Nursing Facilities

OYIS employs a licensed nurse (看護師) at the Nakatsu campus and has a specialized health center (保健室). We believe that healthy children learn better; educated children grow to raise healthier families. Our school nurse works to assure that children have access to educational opportunities regardless of their state of health.

  • A full-time school nurse improves student health.
    • Students with access to a full-time school nurse are less likely to visit the emergency room.
    • Students are more likely to visit an appropriate health care provider if they have a medical referral from the school nurse.
  • A full-time school nurse improves student achievement.
    • Students are less likely to miss school due to illness when they have a full-time school nurse in their school.
    • A full-time school nurse can help reduce the achievement gap that students with chronic health conditions face.

Auditorium

One of the facilities that we share with the Osaka YMCA is their Tosabori Auditorium, located on the second floor of the Osaka YMCA building. This is a great space for ceremonies, performances, and other large-scale group activities.

Workout Room & Gym

One of the great benefits of being connected with the Osaka YMCA is our relationship with the health and wellness aspects of the Y. The Tosabori building is equipped with a full-size gymnasium in the basement, as well as a small workout space and a dance studio. Students can schedule a time to use these spaces or can use time during lunch to stretch their legs and play a little basketball. Even older students like to be active during the day!

Recording Studio

The Tosabori building is equipped with a small recording studio – the perfect space for our IBDP Music students to compose and produce their creations. The studio is a small one, but has a mixing board and sound-muffling features. We are looking forward to hearing all the amazing music that comes out of that little space!
