Dear OYIS Community,
This has been an unprecedented time in history. Over the past months, we have done our best to respond to the COVID-19 global pandemic. More recently we have seen the emergence of a global protest mobilized around the theme of Black Lives Matter. It is important as an educational community to outline our guiding principles and values. In our opinion remaining silent constitutes acceptance of systems of exclusion.
OYIS is proud to be an inclusive community. The diversity within our school directly connects us to over 30 nationalities. As an IB world school, we seek to, “develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect” (IBO 2014). As a member of the global YMCA movement, we are also committed to the goal of youth empowerment and equity. These two statements provide the foundation upon which our school is built.
Though it is rare for our institution to make statements of this nature it is our intention to highlight our strong support of international mindedness, global engagement, and service to the community. We believe that our strength comes through the richness of our diversity and the connections we make to the world around us. It is our hope that we are able to provide our students with the opportunity to engage with the world in meaningful ways. It is in this spirit that we strive to create within our community a space that is welcoming to people of all races, faiths, beliefs, and orientations. It is from this position that we support efforts to build a more equitable world for all.
