MYP Scholarship Exam 2020

The OYIS achievement award seeks to recognize academic excellence, community engagement and international mindedness. This is an opportunity for students entering grade 9 or 10 to earn up to a 100% scholarship. The process includes writing a scholarship exam, writing a personal essay and concludes with an interview.

This year there will be a few changes to our academic scholarship programme. These changes are being made to reflect the growth of new grades within our school.

  • Students entering grade 9 and 10 for the September academic year will be able to participate
  • Students will write both a language and mathematics-based test in the first round
  • Students progressing to the final round will be invited to have a personal interview with the scholarship selection committee
  • The committee will offer a scholarship of between 25-100% to successful candidates
  • Decisions will be made based on test results, past academic performance, and extracurricular accomplishment
  • The scholarship exam is open to any new or returning OYIS student
  • There will be a ¥5000 fee to participate in the scholarship exam.

Details of the Scholarship Process:

The goal of our scholarship is to support students in the achievement of academic excellence, community service, and values of our school community. As we are growing our school to include the IB Diploma we would like to attract and retain students of exceptional quality. This scholarship is designed to support these students financially to achieve their goals.

Step 1:

  • Students will complete an online exam focusing on Mathematical reasoning and English language ability
  • Students will submit a short personal essay highlighting their goals for the future (500 words maximum)
  • Based on exam results and personal essay quality, a number of students will be invited to participate in the second round

Step 2:

  • The scholarship exam committee will meet with both the student and parent / caregiver for an individual and group interview
  • Students and families will meet with a minimum of three committee members
  • Questions about future goals, previous academic achievement, and support of the school will be asked
  • Responses will be considered and the final number of scholarship exam finalists will be selected

Step 3:

  • Final decisions will be made based on the previous two steps
  • Decisions will be communicated to families by March 2nd 2020
  • Based on the determination of the scholarship exam committee scholarships ranging from 25 – 100% will be offered to students entering grade 9 – 10 from September 2020

Step 4:

  • Scholarships will be offered to successful candidates
  • Annual interviews will be held with scholarship recipients and decisions on renewal will be made before the end of March each year
